Artist Preswyl Corwen Artist in Residence
Camp Little Hope was commissioned by the Corwen Partnership, the Arts Council of Wales, and Addo, to imagine creative uses for a field that separates Corwen’s Town Square from the future platform of the Llangollen Railway. We developed three long term strategies for the field and town: Gardd Ceridwen (a platform for exploring biosecurity), the Toiledau Residency, and the Wayfinding project. We explored specific aspects of each strategy through art interventions.
Comisiynwyd Camp Little Hope Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, Partneriaeth Corwen ac Addo i ddychmygu defnydd creadigol ar gyfer cae sy'n gwahanu Sgwâr y Dref Corwen oddi wrth ddarpar blatfform Rheilffordd Llangollen. Rydym wedi datblygu tair strategaeth tymor hir ar gyfer y cae a'r dref: Gardd Cerridwen (platfform ar gyfer archwilio bioddiogelwch), y Toiledau Preswyl, a phrosiect Canfod Ffordd. Drwy ymyriadau celf, rydym wedi archwilio agweddau penodol o bob strategaeth gyda'r cyhoedd.
Gardd Ceridwen
Gardd Ceridwen draws on the Welsh myth of Ceridwen and Gwion Bach to explore Wales’ transformation in the face of climate change and biosecurity breaches. The project extends available resources to make the field by the Corwen carpark not just a pass-through but a place, and incorporates amenities for residents, tourists, and ecological communities.
Pests and diseases steal across borders in imported plants, in the wood of shipping pallets, and on mud encrusted tyres. Climate change opens territories to some species while closing them to others. Gardd Ceridwen hosts species prepared for a range of future challenges. Blooms in a Climate Calendar indicate shifts in the timing of seasons while a variety of saplings test their resilience over common forest trees. Tree stumps, hedges, and meadows prove crucial habitat corridors for animals forced to migrate.
As new conditions emerge, the garden will unfold as a demonstration of the transforming Welsh landscape. Gardd Ceridwen is not a fortress. Change is natural. Gardd Ceridwen grows for this changing future.
Mae Gardd Ceridwen yn deillio o chwedl Gymreig Ceridwen a Gwion Bach i archwilio'r trawsnewidiad o Gymru yn wyneb newid hinsawdd a thoramodau bioddiogelwch. Mae'r prosiect yn ymestyn adnoddau sydd ar gael i wneud y cae ger maes parcio Corwen nid yn unig yn lle i basio trwyddo ond hefyd yn lle sy'n ymgorffori cyfleusterau i breswylwyr, ymwelwyr, a chymunedau ecolegol.
Mae plâu a chlefydau yn ymestyn ar draws ffiniau mewn planhigion a fewnforiwyd, yn y coed ar baledi llongau, ac ar deiars wedi'u gorchuddio â mwd. Mae newid yn yr hinsawdd yn agor tiriogaethau i rai rhywogaethau tra'i fod yn cau eraill allan. Mae Gardd Cerridwen yn cynnal rhywogaethau a baratowyd ar gyfer ystod o heriau yn y dyfodol. Mae Blodau mewn Calendr yr Hinsawdd yn awgrymu newidiadau yn amseriad y tymhorau tra bod amrywiaeth o goed ifanc yn profi eu gwytnwch dros goed coedwig cyffredin. Mae bonion coed, gwrychoedd, a dolydd yn profi'n goridorau cynefin hanfodol ar gyfer anifeiliaid sy'n cael eu gorfodi i ymfudo.
Fel daw amodau newydd i'r amlwg, bydd yr ardd yn datblygu fel arwydd o dirwedd drawsnewidiol Cymru. Nid yw Gardd Ceridwen yn gaer. Mae newid yn naturiol. Mae Gardd Cerridwen yn tyfu ar gyfer newid yn y dyfodol.
Plant Audit - Archwiliad Planhigion
The field needed soil testing and a plant audit to prepare for Gardd Ceridwen. Students from Ysgol Caer Drewyn helped us begin the plant audit by collecting and pressing 48 specimens from across the field.

Toiledau Residency - Toiledau Preswyl
Camp Little Hope explored the conversion of Corwen’s coin-operated public toilet block into a combined artist workspace and staffed toilet facility. After attending meetings of multiple Corwen community groups and learning about issues currently facing the toilets, as well as those expected to arise with the arrival of the Llangollen Railway, we proposed the addition of a small multipurpose fabrication studio to the front of the toilet block. Residents could receive free lodging and studio space in exchange for part-time work, allowing the artists to monitor the expanded toilets while also completing projects in-residence. This unique combination of functions would supplement available County and town funds with arts funding and offer travelers two reasons to visit: toilets and a rotating selection of artists at work.
Though this project is unlikely to see completion due to the short timeline for renovating the toilets before the arrival of the Llangollen steam train, pursuing the project introduced the idea of an on-going artist residency to Corwen residents and leaders. Currently discussion is under way to incorporate an artist residency into the Corwen Town Plan, potentially including studios, exhibition space, and a fabrication workshop for visiting and local artists.

Ar ôl mynychu cyfarfodydd gyda sawl grŵp cymunedol yng Nghorwen a dysgu am faterion sy'n wynebu'r toiledau, yn ogystal â'r rhai y disgwylir i godi gyda dyfodiad Rheilffordd Llangollen, cynigom ychwanegu stiwdio amlbwrpas fach i flaen y bloc toiledau. Gallai preswylwyr gael llety rhad ac am ddim a gofod stiwdio yn gyfnewid am waith rhan-amser, gan ganiatáu'r artistiaid i fonitro'r toiledau estynedig a hefyd yn cwblhau prosiectau wrth fod yn breswyl. Byddai'r cyfuniad unigryw hyn o swyddogaethau yn ychwanegu at gronfeydd y Sir a'r dref gydag arian y celfyddydau a chynnig dau reswm i deithwyr ymweld: toiledau a detholiad cylchdro o artistiaid wrth eu gwaith.
Er nad yw'r prosiect hwn yn debygol o gael ei gwblhau o ganlyniad i'r amserlen fer ar gyfer adnewyddu'r toiledau cyn dyfodiad trên stêm Llangollen, daeth mynd ar drywydd y prosiect â'r syniad o gael artist preswyl i drigolion ac arweinwyr Corwen. Ar hyn o bryd mae trafodaethau ar y gweill i gynnwys artist preswyl yng Nghynllun Tref Corwen, ac o bosibl cynnwys stiwdios, gofod arddangos, a gweithdy ar gyfer artistiaid lleol a rhai sy'n ymweld.
Cynllun Peilot Toiledau Residency Pilot
Camp Little Hope invited resident artist Mary Rothlisberger to pilot the Toiledau Residency September 28 - October 5, working in a temporary studio space installed by the toilet block. Her residency was an opportunity to observe how an artist’s presence effects use of the toilets and perceptions of Corwen. Working on her own projects, she interacted with Corwen residents and visitors, and pioneered the use of Corwen and its car park as a location for studio work in the public sphere.

Way-finding - Prosiect Canfod Fford
Way-finding explored methods of connection and conversation within Corwen. This strategy worked with current town signage and interpretive material to strengthen links in town. Projects included experimental sign-making workshops with visitors, tourists and businesses and the conversion of the town square noticeboard into a public museum. Way-finding looked to create a platform to reach audiences within Corwen, and establish a means to share and contextualize our strategies and projects.

Roedd y strategaeth hon yn gweithio gydag arwyddion cyfredol y dref a deunydd dehongli i gryfhau cysylltiadau yn y dref. Roedd prosiectau'n cynnwys gweithdai gwneud arwyddion arbrofol gydag ymwelwyr, twristiaid a busnesau a thrawsnewid hysbysfwrdd sgwâr y dref yn amgueddfa gyhoeddus. Roedd y prosiect Canfod Ffordd eisiau creu llwyfan i gyrraedd cynulleidfaoedd yng Nghorwen, a sefydlu dulliau i rannu ac ymgorffori ein strategaethau a phrosiectau.
Sign UP - Cofrestrwch
Sign Up playfully maps people’s thoughts about Corwen. Part research, part collaborative mission statement it resulted in a trail of signs through town, encouraging consideration of Corwen’s past, present and future. We made free-standing green circular signs, recalling railway signals and already existent heritage signs. During a workshop we invited visitors & residents to draw or write thoughts, memories, or hopes about Corwen on the signs. Posters with a similar green circle were given to businesses. The freestanding signs were used to mark out the planned footpath into town from the future trainplatform and the posters in storefront windows connected the paths to the square and town..

Yn ymchwil rhannol ac yn ddatganiad cenhadaeth ar y cyd, roedd yn arwain at lwybr o arwyddion trwy'r dref, gan annog ystyried gorffennol, presennol a dyfodol Corwen. Gwnaethom arwyddion crwn gwyrdd, ailddefnyddio signalau rheilffordd ac arwyddion treftadaeth a oedd eisoes yn bodoli. Yn ystod gweithdy gwahoddwyd ymwelwyr a thrigolion i dynnu llun neu ysgrifennu meddyliau, atgofion, neu obeithion am Gorwen ar yr arwyddion. Rhoddwyd posteri gyda chylch gwyrdd tebyg i fusnesau. Defnyddiwyd yr arwyddion annibynnol i farcio'r llwybr a gynlluniwyd i'r dref o ddarpar blatfform y trên a rhoddwyd y posteri yn ffenestri siopau sy'n cysylltu'r llwybrau i'r sgwâr a'r dref.
Amgueddfa Corwen Museum
The existing town square noticeboard was transformed into Amgueddfa Corwen Museum. The museum is an experiment with a playful alternative use of the space and exhibits explore topics as diverse as biodiversity in the field by the car park to Corwen Archaeology Group's test site dig. The museum format offers a different context for engagement with Corwen. During the residency museum tours were held every Saturday.

Access Design Plan Cynllun Dylunio Mynediad
Our investigation into wayfinding in Corwen led to an invitation to assist the town with their visitor and navigational signage and develop an Access Design Plan brief. This brief catalogs the design and content of current signage, includes an opinion survey of residents and businesses, and lays out a new wayfinding system with recommendations for its aesthetic, themes, locations, and content.
